- BY OR AFTER SHOBAL CLEVENGER, BUST OF
BY OR AFTER SHOBAL CLEVENGER, BUST OF AMOS LAWRENCEPainted plaster portrait bust by or after Shobal Vail Clevenger (American, 1812-1843), depicting Amos Lawrence (1786-1852), the prominent Boston textile merchant, philanthropist, and father of Amos A. Lawrence (who founded the University of Kansas). Lawrence is depicted as a balding man in later age, with draped shoulders, atop a circular base. Unsigned. 27"H x 17"W x 13"D. 20th century. Note: a larger version of this bust by Clevenger, also in plaster, is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Biography (from the Oxford Dictionary of American Art and Artists): "A farm boy who received little schooling, as a teenager Shobal Clevenger began working as a mason. In the late 1820s he moved to Cincinnati, where he worked with a stonecutter and met Hiram Powers. He had some instruction from Frederick Eckstein, and in 1836-37 he studied anatomy at the Ohio Medical College. He had achieved considerable skill by the time Henry Clay sat for him in Lexington, Kentucky, late in 1837. In the late 1830s Clevenger traveled several times to the East Coast. In Washington, New York, Boston, and other cities, many eminent persons numbered among his patrons. By the time he departed for Italy in 1840, no other American portrait sculptor was more highly esteemed. He settled in Florence, began translating his portrait busts into marble, and embarked on ideal figures. These included a life-size Indian Chief (lost; 1842), then a novel subject and probably the earliest sculpture to treat a distinctly American theme. Suffering from tuberculosis, just three years after his arrival he sailed for home but died at sea. In Florence, Powers arranged for Clevenger's remaining portrait busts and an ideal head to be posthumously carved in marble."

It was organized in the summer of 1862 with men from Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee and was the successor to Thomas Claiborne's 6th Confederate Cavalry Regt. which included H. Clay King's Kentucky Cavalry Battalion. It fought at Murfreesboro, Thompson's Station, Franklin, Chickamauga, Blue Springs and in the Atlanta Campaign and aided in the defense of Savannah. The regiment disbanded prior to the surrender in May, 1865. Bate was taken prisoner at some point and held at Johnson's Island; his sister, Eugenia P. Bass, petitioned Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 15, 1864 to obtain his release. - ANDREW JACKSON COFFIN HANDBILL AND POLITICAL
ANDREW JACKSON COFFIN HANDBILL AND POLITICAL CARTOON1st item: The New Hampshire Journal, Oct. 20 1828, newspaper with a "Coffin Handbill" presidential campaign broadside attacking Andrew Jackson on the front page. 4 pp. Note: The Presidential campaign of 1828 between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson was one of the most vicious in American history, with character assaults on both sides. This woodcut broadside, one of a series issued by editor and publisher John Binns of Philadelphia, charged "The Hero of the Battle of New Orleans" with what the Adams campaign considered an unjust action during the War of 1812. Jackson had let stand a decision to execute six Tennessee militiamen who left their unit near Mobile. Their defense argued that the men had left their unit under the mistaken belief that their enlistments had expired, only to return after realizing their error. They were, however, found guilty and executed, with Jackson refusing to intervene. (Ref. William C. - JOHN F KENNEDY SENATE LETTERHEAD PENCIL
JOHN F KENNEDY SENATE LETTERHEAD PENCIL DOODLEA wonderful JFK item as senator in which he lists the five greatest United States senators. Kennedy and his committee worked between 1957 and 1959 to determine who the honored five would be. They ultimately chose Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, Daniel Webster, Robert A. Taft, and Robert La Follette. On his United States Senate letterhead, Kennedy writes their surnames (see attached scan). JFK had previously won the Pulitzer Prize for his authorship of Profiles in Courage, and was fast becoming a historian in his own right.
Provenance: comes from the John Burke Jovich collection. World-renowned US Presidential Historian.
JFK's personal secretary during his senatorial and White House years, Evelyn Lincoln, was a dear friend of mine. She frequently reminded Kennedy to pass on his doodles and notes, all unofficial documents, to his friend Congressman Mike Kirwan. Evelyn and her husband Abe (Harold) Lincoln, reviewed every one of JFK's doodles in my Kirwan collection during my visit at their Chevy Chase, MD home back in the early 1990s. She never questioned their authenticity, and her vivid memory of Kennedy scrawling some of the documents brought tears to her eyes. Evelyn was the expert at deciphering the late president's difficult to read handwriting

- EARLY AMERICAN SIGNATURES COLLECTIONLarge
EARLY AMERICAN SIGNATURES COLLECTIONLarge boards formerly binding the Baltimore Evening Post -- the entire year of 1809. Front endpaper has accession bookplate from the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore. Inside the front cover, pasted around an oval photo of George Washington, is a most remarkable collection of cut autographs. These are NOT printed signatures, but live, inked signatures -- different types and textures of paper, different tones, etc. The signatures, starting from the top, include the following: Robert Treat Paine (Continental Congress), Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, [illegible], Rob Morris (Continental Congress), Henry Clay (Senator), Roger Sherman (Congress), John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Charles Carroll (Continental Congress), Stephan Hopkins (Rhode Island governor), Sam Huntington (Connecticut governor), Gerard Hopkins (a Baltimore businessman), William McMechen (Baltimore County court justice), Roger Taney (Maryland attorney general), and Washington Irving (author). In the bottom center is the only printed matter on the page -- a letter by Horatio Nelson. A curious mixture of rather unremarkable individuals with some of the most prominent Americans in the history of the country. It has been suggested that the collection was assembled by a newspaper employee around 1810-1820 -- someone with access to letters (such as letters to the editor) or signed documents on file that perhaps were going to be purged. In any case, it is unknown whether these signatures are all genuine, or if some are secretarially signed. None of them, though, are printed signatures. A partially worn engraving to the left of Washington's picture depicts an elderly black woman, on whose apron is written the name "Old Joice Heth," a P.T. Barnum character who was alleged to be the 161-year-old nurse of George Washington. One clue as to the possible assembler of this piece is an early 20th century bookplate just at the end of all the signatures. The bookplate reads "Ex libris Dr. Chr. Deetjen." Dr. Christian Deetjen, a Baltimore physician and X-Ray pioneer, and personal friend of H.L. Mencken, was quite the old book collector, and one of his hobbies was bookbinding. Volume measures 19-1/2" x 12-3/4". A fascinating collection, however it came to be. shipping info This item will need to be shipped by a packing company of your choice. We maintain a list of reliable shippers, or you may choose your own.

- Matthew Harris Jouett (1788-1827)
A
Matthew Harris Jouett (1788-1827)
A portrait of Dr. Horace Holley (1808-1827)
oil on panel
26 1/2 x 20 3/8 inches.
Dr. Horace Holley was a native of Salisbury, Connecticut, who studied divinity at Yale. Although initially a staunch Calvinist, he became a Unitarian, a radical movement which cast doubt on the divinity of Jesus Christ as well as the Bible as an undisputed source of literal truth, and focused instead on the transcendental nature of faith. “Religion does not consist so much in thinking as in feeling and acting,” he once wrote. Holley’s renown as an intellectual came to the attention of certain community leaders in Lexington who were committed to making local Transylvania University the most important center of higher learning in what was then thought of as “the west”. With the encouragement of Henry Clay, he accepted the post in 1818. He proceeded to establish a highly respected medical school, and a law school guided by Kentucky’s most prominent legal minds. Not long after his arrival in Lexington, Holley was painted by Matthew Harris Jouett, recently returned from study with Gilbert Stuart in Boston. That portrait was presented by the artist to Transylvania University and eventually hung in their Morrison Chapel, until occupied by Federal Forces during the Civil War; it was then missing until 1896 when found in a Lexington junk store, purchased by a donor and returned to Transylvania. The portrait at hand is a variant of that work. Recent discoveries in primary sources and clarification of provenance details confirm the attribution to Jouett. It is recorded as number 135 in the list of Jouett works compiled by his grandson, Richard Jouett Menefee, published in 1902. (Samuel Woodson Price, The Old Masters of the Bluegrass, Louisville: Filson Club, 1902, p. 54) At that time it was listed as the property of W. E. Burr of St. Louis. He was the husband of Holley’s granddaughter Harriette Brand, whose mother was Harriette Holley, who married Moses Brand in Lexington in 1825. His parents and several members of the extended Brand family were painted by Jouett and may have commissioned this work as a wedding present. Close examination of the painting disclosed several Jouett characteristics. The left ear is highlighted in a red glaze intended to offset the warm flesh tones beneath the left eye. There is also evidence of Jouett’s noted “standing white” a medium he created by mixing lead white paint with turpentine, which after drying, left a thick impasto on the surface. This portrait is also on panel of the type often used by Jouett, the back of which has been sized with a chalky medium frequently seen in his works. Downing and Grant, a paint and paper supply store near Jouett’s studio in downtown Lexington, carried these panels. Holley’s association with Transylvania did not have a happy ending. He was hounded by the Presbyterians and some in the local press. In 1824 the Argus of Western America in Frankfort accused him of “promoting the Federalist Party’s beliefs, deism and ‘dandyism’”. In his funeral oration for Transylvania’s great benefactor Colonel James Morrison, he insinuated that the Presbyterians were a common nuisance. Soon after that funeral he was replaced in the chapel pulpit by a rotating group of ministers from the main Protestant denominations. He resigned his office and departed Lexington, only to die in late July, 1827, one week before Jouett’s death in August. LITERATURE:
